Lead Sheet (Lead Plate): Key Properties & Common Industrial Applications
Lead sheet, also widely called lead plate, is rolled metal sheet made of high purity lead (typically 99.99% / 99.994% Pb). Thanks to its unique physical and chemical properties — high density, excellent ductility, strong absorption against ionizing radiation and good acid resistance — lead plate remains an irreplaceable material across many industrial sectors.
1. Medical Radiation Shielding (The Largest Application)
This is the most well-known use of lead plate. Lead can effectively absorb X-ray and gamma-ray radiation, so it is the standard shielding material for medical imaging rooms.
- Walls, doors, observation windows of X-ray, DR, CT, fluoroscopy and dental radiography rooms
- Mobile radiation barriers and protective linings inside medical cabinets
- Custom thickness is quoted in mmPb (lead equivalent) to meet local hospital safety codes.
2. Nuclear & Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
For industrial radiography, nuclear laboratories and isotope facilities:
- Shielding lining for gamma ray inspection rooms and radioactive storage vaults
- Radiation containment for industrial NDT testing in oil, pipeline and metal fabrication industries
- Collimator shielding for physics research equipment.
3. Chemical & Anti-Corrosion Lining
Lead has outstanding resistance to sulfuric acid and many corrosive chemicals.
- Tank lining, reaction vessel lining and acid drainage piping in chemical plants, electroplating and metallurgy workshops
- Anti-corrosion waterproof lining for acidic wastewater pools.
Note: Lead is NOT suitable for strong alkaline or nitric acid environments.
4. Acoustic Insulation & Vibration Damping
High density makes lead sheet a great sound barrier material.
- Sound insulation layer for recording studios, cinema walls, generator rooms and industrial pump stations
- Reduce low-frequency noise and vibration transmission in building MEP systems.
5. Counterweight & Weighting Applications
Dense, malleable lead plate is easy to cut and stack for mass balance.
- Counterweights for elevators, cranes, marine vessels, machinery and aerospace assemblies
- Fishing weights, balancing blocks for sports equipment.
6. Battery & Electrical Industry
- Lead plates / lead grids are core raw materials for lead-acid storage batteries.
- Cable sheathing for underground cables, providing moisture and corrosion protection.
7. Construction & Waterproofing
Rolled lead sheet can be bent and formed easily.
- Historic building roof flashing, waterproof membrane, roof expansion joint sealing
- Radiation shielding basement lining for new medical buildings.
Core Advantages of High-Purity Lead Plate
- Superior radiation attenuation for X & gamma rays
- Excellent ductility, easy cutting, bending, rolling and on-site installation
- Strong resistance against sulfuric acid and corrosive fumes
- Stable density, consistent shielding performance
- Customizable: thickness, width, length, rolls or flat plates available
